Educational resource on the reproduction of pelagic fish

As part of the 2026 Fish of the Yearcampaign, the Marine Teleost TAG is highlighting the reproduction of pelagic species.

Did you know that 75% of marine fish species release their eggs directly into the open ocean? This mode of reproduction is called pelagic spawning. Although it is very common, it remains surprisingly little known.

This year, the Teleost TAG invites you to learn about the reproduction of pelagic fish through its “Fish of the Year” campaign. Despite the research conducted so far, many questions remain about this reproductive strategy. Through this campaign, we hope to encourage collaboration among scientists, aquariums, divers, and the public to fill these gaps and better protect marine species.
