To wrap up Ocean Month 2026, the Aquarium-Muséum Universitaire de Liège invites you to an evening dedicated to the ocean, blending scientific discovery with wonder. Professor Thierry Jauniaux’s lecture will be followed by a screening of the documentary *Ocean with David Attenborough*, offering an immersive journey into the marine world and the challenges of protecting it.

The evening will begin with a lecture by Dr. Thierry Jauniaux: "Suspicious Deaths at Sea: What Dolphins Reveal About Our Oceans"

Through the study of strandings and the causes of mortality among marine mammals, this lecture will offer scientific insight into the health of the oceans and the consequences of human activities on marine ecosystems.

For over 35 years, Dr. Thierry Jauniaux has been performing autopsies on marine mammals along the coasts of Belgium, France, and the Netherlands—and sometimes as far afield as Iceland or South Africa. A veterinarian with the FARAH Research Unit at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at ULiège, he has examined several thousand porpoises, dolphins, whales, and seals, both in the lab and directly on the beaches, often under extreme conditions.

His work goes beyond simply identifying a cause of death: it involves reconstructing the final days of an animal about which we know nothing, to understand what its death reveals about the state of the oceans. A resolutely “One Health” approach—the health of the seas, that of animals, and that of humans are intimately linked.
Because the pollutants that accumulate in the bodies of marine mammals are also found in the fish we eat. By studying these sentinels of the sea, Thierry Jauniaux anticipates risks that directly affect us.

In this lecture, he will paint a clear picture of the major threats facing marine wildlife today—overfishing, plastic and chemical pollution, collisions with ships, and global warming—while offering concrete avenues for action. A rigorous and committed, on-the-ground perspective on what our oceans are trying to tell us.

The evening will continue with a screening of the documentary *Ocean with David Attenborough*. This filminvites the audience to explore one of the most essential and fascinating environments on our planet: the ocean. Through David Attenborough’s experience and perspective, this film traces the major discoveries that have profoundly transformed our understanding of the marine world.

From coral reefs to kelp forests, all the way to the still-unknown depths, spectacular images reveal the richness and diversity of marine ecosystems, as well as their fundamental role in the Earth’s balance.

The documentary also highlights the growing pressures on the oceans, particularly destructive fishing and coral bleaching. It thus offers an essential reflection on the impact of human activities and the need to preserve these fragile environments.

But beyond this assessment, the film carries a message firmly focused on the future. Through concrete and inspiring examples from around the world, it highlights the ocean’s ability to regenerate when protective measures are implemented.

Drawing on a lifetime of exploration and education, David Attenborough reminds us that we are living in a pivotal era: one of the greatest oceanographic discoveries, but also one of decisive choices for the future of life. Restoring marine life on a large scale is still possible—provided we act now.

Ocean Month: A Month for the Ocean

This screening marks the conclusion of Ocean Month and is part of the celebration of World Oceans Day, proclaimed by the United Nations to remind us that the oceans cover more than 70% of our planet and produce nearly half of the oxygen we breathe.
