Fishing and aquaculture: what impact on the environment? What can we do on a daily basis? Eat fish once or twice a week to stay healthy. But what impact does our consumption have on the environment?
In 2020, the world's fisheries produced around 90 million tonnes of fish and other aquatic animals. Some species have seen their populations decline by more than 80% over the last fifty years due to overfishing.
In Belgium, we don't depend on fish consumption for our protein intake. Yet each inhabitant consumes an average of 25 kg of aquatic products per year. Our habits lead us to consume a limited number of species, resulting in their overexploitation.
What can we do on a daily basis? Is it possible to make sustainable choices ? Is aquaculture a solution ?
Find the answers to these questions in our "Fish & Ships" educational exhibition.
