Corals in the tropics

This book presents the essentials of what we know about these complex, even strange to us humans, animals that have the fascinating ability to build reefs. Lavishly illustrated with some fifty photographs, maps and original drawings, it is aimed at young and old alike.
This journey to the tropics begins with the Belgian scientific expedition to the Great Barrier Reef in 1967 and continues with the discovery of this "animal called coral". We then stop off at the reefs to learn how they develop. The journey ends with a look at the threats to this fragile ecosystem, the richest on the planet, and the measures being taken to protect it.
Better knowledge for better protection - that's what "Corals in the Tropics" is all about.
This brochure can be read on its own or as an extension to the permanent interactive exhibition "Corals in the Tropics". The most remarkable and characteristic specimens from the rich collection brought back by the University of Liège expedition in 1967 are on display here, face to face with living corals in the Aquarium-Muséum.
