Blaschka: masters and models
If a Museum's natural science collections are a priori essentially made up of preserved animal specimens, they sometimes contain other remarkable heritage objects of great scientific, historical and artistic value.
The “Blaschka” collection of the Aquarium-Museum of the University of Liège is one of them. These are glass models of marine invertebrate animals created at the end of the 19th century by the master glassmakers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka and acquired in 1886 by the founder of the Zoological Institute, Édouard Van Beneden. Teaching material yesterday, Blaschkas have today become true works of art. An irreplaceable and unique heritage in Belgium.
More than a simple catalog of the collection, the work traces its history and that of its creators, evokes the results of their analyzes and conservation treatments, and brings these dazzling glass jewels to life under the gaze of artistic photographs.
